Tulip Bulb Care

Tulips must be one of the easiest plants to care for. They survive in nearly any type of soil, providing it has adequate drainage.

Although not technically named so, tulips are much like annuals, often lasting more than a year or two. Tulip bulb care - Bulbs need to be planted out in the fall to give them plenty of time to produce roots before going dormant over winter. During this time, they only need a little water where they are planted.

Nature generally takes its toll and will provide as much water that is needed during the spring. Tulips can tolerate lesser amounts of rain water during this time so don't worry if the season is quite dry. The tulip evolved from the dry mountain slopes of Turkey and other Asiatic regions so they are well suited to dryer climates.

Tulips come in three broad categories; Early, mid-season and late. Research varieties to check which category your tulip falls into and water appropriately. If they are planted in the ground they generally don't need fertilizing apart from when they are first planted. Over feeding can lead to tall, leggy growth.

If the tulip looks like it needs perking up just spray a little fertilizer over the leaves (although not in direct sunlight as this will burn) or place some granular fertilizer around the base of the plant.

With little tulip bulb care, tulips provide bold colorful statements where they are planted and brighten up the area for the time that they last. When they have flowered, let them die back before removing the foliage and digging up ready for the next year.
