Geographical areas and weather zones are the primary consideration when choosing the kind of species for tree gardening. Still, God made plenty of trees; so looking for one you'll like won't be a problem.
Hemlock trees have thin foliage and are suitable for the Northwest. Cedar trees are very good providers of shade. Their leaves are bright green and very abundant. Spruce is gray-green and has the very memorable shape of a Christmas tree.
Maples are very famous in New England. You can see maple trees anywhere you go in the New England area. The bonus of it is that there are plenty of maple species. You can select the kind of maple you want, plant it and water it once a month. Of course, the work comes in the fall season when maple leaves literally fall.
California has plenty of pine trees. There are also fir and redwood trees to the north and eucalyptus and oak to the south. If you live in California, it would be wise to select a tree that is native to this state as this will reduce the amount of maintenance required on your tree. The fact that they have survived to this day means that they are well adapted to the climate and that they have acquired immunity from diseases and insects.
On a more practical level, having a fruit-bearing tree or two can save you a trip to the grocery. Of course, this tree gardening will require more maintenance because of the fruits they bear. Aside form insects, fruits on a tree can also attract bats, squirrels and any other animal that cares for the taste of your fruits.
In California, growing peaches, lemon and orange will give you a very healthy tree. The same can be said for Florida with the exception of the peaches. Citrus trees generally are adapated to sunny climates. Georgia, like California, is another state where peaches grow well.
Cherry trees have very nice flowers. You can see them in the states of Virginia and Washington. Aside from the beauty of its flowers, the cherry tree also produces nice fruit.
As your chosen tree grows, you might find it necessary to prune them. Some tree branches may get too close to your house. This could prove to be a fire hazard at some point in time. Fruit trees must be trimmed if they are to produce a healthy bunch of delicacies. Some trees may fall victim to disease or infection. The only possible solution may be to prune the affected parts of the tree. Pine and cedar trees grow branches pretty low on their trunk. They likewise have to be trimmed if you want to be able to get close to them.
Fruit trees need plenty of water; especially cherry and apple trees. On the opposite side, hemlock and pine get all they need from the ground to survive.
