Starting a Rose Garden

Starting a rose garden will much depend on the time you have on your hands to spend caring for them. There are a huge range of roses to choose from, which each require different levels of maintenance.

Many 'Modern Roses' are extremely beautiful and fragrant but require huge amounts of time tending to them - pruning, watering and feeding.

Roses attract a range of pests and diseases more so than many other shrubs. Hybrid roses classified in the 'Old Garden Roses' category, however, have been bred to resist disease and require far less attention. They bloom for several months at a time and have a strong scent but people with allergies will suffer badly. If this is the case try 'shrub roses.' These are disease resistant like 'Old Garden Roses' but do not produce such a strong scent.

Roses can be quite temperamental so if you are new to gardening, try growing landscape roses first. They are easy to look after and are disease resistant. Climbing roses are similar to landscape roses and will look fantastic in any garden. Plant roses were they will receive lots of sunlight for optimum growth.

Roses come in all sorts of beautiful colors and sizes. If you are particular about your colors, carefully choose rose varieties that will suit your existing garden landscape. And remember, some rose varieties can grow up to 15 feet tall so make sure you consider how they will look at full height when you purchase them. Miniature varieties are a great choice for subtle effects in the garden.

Also, be sure to check what climate and temperatures the rose is suited to before you buy it. Certain roses cannot withstand cold temperatures, while others cope with them better.

Roses are beautiful plants but they can be difficult to look after. To avoid it becoming a chore, choose varieties that will suit your level of expertise.
