For some, having a perfect lawn is an essential task and one that takes up many hours of time and requires extreme perfection. For others, mowing the lawn is a matter of keeping it looking neat and tidy.
Either way, there are lots of different lawnmowers, strimmers and power lawn tools available to complete the ongoing task. While it seems slightly barbaric, grass actually grows better when it is cut. If left to grow, it will go to seed and will eventually die off.
Of the more expensive tools in the garden shed, the lawnmower is a machine that can last for many years if it is serviced and looked after well. Like a car, regular servicing is needed. The blade will need to be sharpened, the spark plug (if it has one) cleaned and the air filter and oil changed each year.
Mowing an overgrown lawn alone will tidy up a garden's appearance immensely but for finishing touches, use a strimmer or edger to tidy up the edges of the lawn or to strim grass growing around structures that the lawnmower can't reach.
Strimmers are available with different types of blades for different purposes. Tough weeds will be better strimmed with metal blades while lighter plant life will be easier to strim with plastic string. These types of blades rotate at high speed, slicing anything that is in their path.
A spreader is also particular handy for destroying weeds or fertilizing the lawn. The broadcast spreader, in particular, is useful and long-lasting. It is relatively easy to use and chemicals are dispersed at different settings depending on the type of job and the results you are after. A drop spreader may also be used to target specific areas more accurately.
Keep the lawn aerated with a rake. Rake fallen leaves and leftover grass cuttings to save the lawn from overheating and optimize its growth. Keep your eyes open for any weeds. A long handled spade is effective for digging and removal of weeds.
Keep all power lawn tools clean and dry to ensure they last longer and remember to service and machinery regularly to avoid extra costs.
