Herb Garden Plants

Herbal garden plants are much like ordinary plants in that some of them can survive indoors while some do well outdoors.

There are also some herbal plants that can be placed in these two settings without any detriment to its growth. This is assuming that they receive proper care.

Generally speaking, herbal plants don't really need all that much care. As long as the soil you will use to plant them in has the correct properties your herbal plant needs, they will survive. While ordinary plants may die in poor soil, herbal garden plants will thrive. Because of their nature, you need hardly bother with fertilizers. They might even die if you water them too much.

Bay laurel is a good example of both an indoor and outdoor herb plant. Of course, the ideal environment is still outdoors with rather dry conditions. When planting bay laurel, check to see that your soil has good drainage properties. If you have it in a pot, make sure that your pot's drain isn't clogged. To start planting bay laurel in a pot, you need pre-dampened soil to use as your potting medium. Select a pot size that will contain your bay laurel so that it does not become root bound. Put it in a place where at least 6 hours of sunlight shines through. In one year's time, the bay laurel will be too big for its pot.

A good herbal plant for an outdoor garden is chives. Chives love the sun and can more or less grow up to a foot high. Chives produce buds that open into purple colored flowers that will look good in any garden. It would be best to plant chives in a bunch as they seem to grow better in crowded conditions. You can maintain the chives by clipping the base of the plant free of leaves.

Parsley is an herb plant that will probably see much use if you had one. It is excellent in both indoor and outdoor settings. Growing parsley is a one shot deal. They only last for about a season. If you plant parsley in a pot, it can last you years. Its best to buy parsley seedlings rather than seeds. It makes growing them easier. The best location for a parsley filled pot is on a windowsill. Like chives, you can trim parsley by cutting away the outer leaves as the leaves start to grow in the center of the plant.

One of the more popular herbal plants is lavender. Lavender is well suited to an outdoor environment and will look good carpeting the ground. Lavender gives of a nice odor. In fact, this is why lavender is so popular. Dried lavender is often used in potpourri. Lavender will thrive in dry environs. The soil must have good drainage properties for your lavender to flourish. Lavender is also rarely latched onto by bugs. You need not spray your lavender herbal plants with pesticides that much.

Herb plants may not be as eye catching as a hibiscus, but they are sturdier and can provide more benefits to people who plant them in their gardens. As long as the soil is kept almost dry, herbal garden plants will stay with you through spring, summer, fall and winter.
