Grow Your Own Bonsai

Trees are grown from seed. It's true that many start out as offshoots, prunings, or seedlings of a mature tree. But the entire process starts with a seed.

Gardening tips - How to grow your own bonsai from seed. In order that these seeds develop into trees they need to undergo a phase known as germination.

Laying in the wet and cold soil of wintertime, spring will gradually soften the coat and shell of the seed and encourages timely growth. Soil bacteria are able to help this stage along.

Planting during the fall will allow the seed to undergo this process naturally and slowly. A perfectly valid and artificial technique of preparing a seed is called 'cold stratification'. This consists, basically, of preparing a seed via artificial means by placing it inside a tub in a refrigerator to feign the natural condition.

If getting bonsai seed prepared in a natural or artificial way, this will break the dormancy of the seeds and results in germination. It's often noted that this can take a twelve months or more, with seeds starting to take root in springtime approximately 1½ years after the fall. This period of time is likely to vary by individual seed, climate, and species.

You can offer the seeds some assistance with proper fertilization, even so use in moderation. Once per month at the start of springtime through to mid-summer is sufficient. Fertilization needs to start once the soil starts to warm-up.

It is crucial that soil is kept moist, though not being too wet is just as important. Moisture is necessary, but being too wet often results in killing a plant in growth as soon as soil being too dry.

Of course, being able to find the ideal balance can take some testing. These attempts can often be more focused with the aid of a moisture gauge kit; this is a type of thermometer tool which evaluates water in soil.

Plant them in a pot or container with good quality soil, and then monitor every so often as time goes on. The bonsai seeds ought to be set approximately ½ inch to ¼ inch below the surface with soil that offers ideal drainage.

Once a tiny tree starts to poke a little trunk on the surface you're on the way. However, bear in mind that to grow your own bonsai from seed will take quite a few years.
