Backyard Lily Pond

One of the more aesthetic ponds to establish is that of a backyard lily pond. The water lily plant is able to offer a touch of elegance and character.

If planning on constructing a pond, the delights of a lily pond could make the perfect addition to the backyard. One point to keep in mind is if you're expecting a vast selection of water lily plants, it's not possible in most cases to have that many other forms of plant life.

This is a result of the water lily plant having a need to thrive in areas that aren't occupied with other plants competing for sunlight. This doesn't mean that you're unable to have a selection of plants; it simply means that you should only select a variety of submerged plants and not those floating plants.

Lily plants are split into three categories -

Hardy lilies - These will start to boom in late spring to early fall. If the pond water doesn't get too far below freezing, Hardy lilies are able to survive throughout the winter. Hardy lilies are available in white, yellow, orange, salmon peach, red, and pink.

Dwarf lilies - In a similar way to the Hardy lily, it is able to last the winter. They start out in life as yellow and later turn to red.

Tropical lilies - These are unable to last the winter as a water temperature in the region of 70° Fahrenheit is necessary. The tropical lily is offered in orange, purple, white, red, yellow, pink, red, and blue.

The backyard lily pond would expect maintenance on a regular basis. This is necessary to ensure the quality of the water and that the plant life isn't starting to become too compact.
